WHY GST?

Existing indirect tax system in India consists of several taxes levied by the Central and State governments. Except the limited tax credit between excise and service tax and in case of state VAT and CST, rest of the taxes related to goods and or/ services are cost for industry which passes on the burden to customers. Moreover, the cascading tax effect, interrupted tax credit mechanism, diverse laws of States and Centre on goods and services have multiplied woes of trade, industry and public.
Non-adherence of any scientific basis of classification of goods has multiplied wasteful litigation.   Controversy of distinction between goods and services and treatment of works contract has also been a bone of contention. Judgments have blurred the distinction between goods and services yet the controversy of goods vs. services continues.

Revenue obsession between states and Centre renders a transaction liable to state as well central taxes simultaneously. Red-tapism, bureaucratic apathy, inspector raj, lack of transparency, multiple and diverse laws from one state to another, different rates of tax on same goods in different states etc. have added to business miseries.
This all has led to think of such an indirect tax that ensures universal laws, identical tax rates on same goods and services, eliminates cascading tax effect and ensure seamless tax credit throughout supply chain.
Goods and Services Tax is looked upon a penance for all of above problems. GST is looked upon a solution to all business miseries because of use of technology and least human interface. Universal tax laws, tax rates, unified single tax in lieu of several state and central taxes and elimination of cascading effect are the arguments that outweigh its little shortfalls.
GST seeks to eliminate tax evasion or avoidance and the menace of black money. It shall eliminate the task of keeping manual record, GST shall transform economy to a digital and cash less economy and increaseour GDP manifold.
